New Publication Describing the Ergonomic Benefits of Heads-up Display in Ophthalmic Surgery

Alcon’s commitment to science-based innovation is demonstrated by support of research covering relevant topics.  Musculoskeletal pain issues affect ophthalmic surgeons and can have an impact on surgeon well-being and productivity.† Existing data appear to indicate that heads-up displays (HUD) can improve upon conventional microscopes by reducing ergonomic stress. A recent publication found in Clinical Ophthalmology provides further evidence that addresses the ergonomic benefits of HUD, to include the NGENUITY®3D Visualization System. This study, funded by Alcon, used an observational cross-sectional survey design to understand the use of HUD by US ophthalmic surgeons, and compared the ergonomic outcomes associated with HUD to a conventional optical microscope in the operating room (OR).

Findings included the following:†

-  82% of applicable surgeons reported feeling less pain/discomfort during                 operation since using HUD technology.

-  A logistic regression model found those who reported using the device in               greater than 50% of cases had more than a 5 times greater odds of                         reporting an improvement in pain since introducing HUD into the OR.

-  Ergonomics was the second most common reason provided by surgeons to             explain their preference for HUD.
